What needs painting?

What does deck staining in Fresno involve?

Deck staining protects wood from sun and moisture, but the stain only works if the wood is properly prepared. The usual steps are cleaning off dirt, mildew and old finish, letting the wood dry, sanding rough or raised grain, and then applying stain or sealer by brush, roller or pad. Railings, steps and the underside of rails get attention too, since those spots often fail first.

Wood sealing for outdoor structures is not limited to decks. Fences, pergolas, gates, patio covers and outdoor furniture can all be treated the same way. If you want the house itself repainted, see our exterior house painting page.

Why do Fresno decks weather so fast?

Intense sun and very dry air are hard on wood. Ultraviolet light breaks down the surface fibers and turns wood gray. Dry heat pulls moisture out, which leads to cracks, splits, cupped boards and raised grain. Decks that face south or west take the worst of it, and boards with no shade can get uncomfortably hot underfoot.

Irrigation can add another problem. Sprinklers that soak deck posts or the edge of the boards cause dark stains and rot over time. Winter fog and the occasional storm bring moisture into unsealed wood, and the swing between wet and dry stresses the boards further.

  • Gray, faded boards on sun-facing decks
  • Cracks and splinters from dry heat
  • Stains or rot near sprinklers and post bases
  • Peeling film from old, failed finishes

What changes the price of deck staining?

Size is the first factor, measured in square feet of deck surface plus railings and steps. After that, the condition of the wood and the old finish matter most. A deck with peeling film coating needs stripping, which takes much longer than a simple clean and recoat. Heavily weathered boards need more sanding.

The product you choose also changes the cost. Clear sealers show the grain but need more frequent maintenance in strong sun. Semi-transparent and solid stains usually last longer under direct exposure, because pigment blocks more ultraviolet light. Other factors include height off the ground, access around the deck, repairs to loose boards, and how much masking is needed near plants and the house.

A written quote should state the prep, the product and the coats.

A modest deck can often be cleaned, dried and stained over a few days. The wood must be dry before stain goes on, and stain needs dry weather afterward. New pressure-treated lumber may need weeks to dry before it will take a finish, so ask when your wood is ready.

Fresno heat is a challenge. Stain applied to a hot, sun-baked deck can dry too fast and look uneven or lap-marked. Early starts, shade and working in smaller sections help. Spring and fall are generally the easiest seasons. Plan to keep foot traffic and furniture off until the stain is dry to the touch, and longer if the label asks.

What should you expect on the day, and when should you call?

The crew will cover nearby plants, siding and walls, then wash and prep the deck. You may see water runoff and hear sanding. Keep pets inside, and move grills and furniture off the deck beforehand. Tell the crew where sprinklers are located so they can be turned off while the wood dries.

Call when water no longer beads on the boards, when the wood has turned gray or when you see cracking. As a rule of thumb, if a splash of water soaks in rather than beading, the wood is ready for attention. Questions about painting in Fresno

How often should a deck be restained in Fresno?

It varies with the product, the wood and how much sun the deck gets. Fully exposed decks in strong sun may need attention sooner than shaded ones. A simple check is to sprinkle water on the boards. If it soaks in instead of beading, it is time to plan a clean and recoat.

Is it better to stain or paint a deck?

Stain soaks in and tends to wear away gradually, which makes recoating easier. Deck paint forms a surface film that hides the grain but can peel in strong sun and foot traffic. Many homeowners prefer a semi-transparent or solid stain for that reason.

Can you stain a new deck right away?

Often not. New wood, especially pressure-treated lumber, holds moisture and may need time to dry before stain bonds well. Some products are made for newer wood. Ask your painter to test the moisture or follow the stain label before you commit to a start date.

What is the difference between a sealer and a stain?

A clear sealer protects wood from water and shows the natural color, but offers less protection from sun. A stain adds pigment, which blocks ultraviolet light and slows graying. Semi-transparent and solid stains usually give more protection under direct sun.

Do you do fences and pergolas too?

Wood sealing for fences, pergolas, gates and patio covers is part of this service area. The prep and products are similar to a deck. Mention the type of wood and how much sun it gets when you call, so the quote can reflect the work.
